Sunday Favorites - My Mothers Talented Hands

It's a new year, a new decade and there will be a whole bunch of new blogs and new blog posts in this next year. But it's always nice to look back. To reflect and savor a post written that's special to the writer. And that's why I love Sunday Favorites, hosted by Happy to Design.

This is a favorite post of mine from September 14, 2009. Another reason for posting this one today is that tomorrow I want to share another work of art done by my mother's hands.

If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands? ~Milton Berle

It's amazing that with only two hands mothers do as much as they do. My mom is a perfect example of that. Growing up I always remember my mom busy doing something, sewing, cleaning, cooking, painting, crocheting...and since we're at crocheting I'll stop because that's what I wanted to talk about today and share with you.

My mom has always been great at crocheting. She once did the whole Last Supper in crochet. And I'm not talking some little piece that goes in a little frame...this was a HUGE piece which was framed and hung in her kitchen for many years. It probably measures 6feet by 4 feet. It looks something like this one, only much more massive.

Unfortunately I couldn't photograph it because right now it's sitting in the frame on the floor behind her very heavy china hutch in her kitchen. But it's mine. She gave it to me many, many years ago. I have no idea where I will hang it because I really have no walls in my kitchen, but I will knock out a window and make a wall out of it if I have to!!!

But ok, before I start knocking out windows and building walls, let me just get back to the subject of my post today. My mom has started crocheting again and her first project was this little beauty for me :-)

A beautiful butterfly panel. It's pretty big as you can tell from the photo below. This isn't a love seat it's a chair and a half and this fits clear across it. I would love to display it differently but I haven't found quite the right place yet...but I will.

Mom is currently working on another project which I hope to post for you as soon as it's finished. I think it's going to be about as big as the one above, and she's only half done.

My mom taught my sister and I both to crochet, and I've made a doily here and there. I have posted one here. But I have no where near the talent or determination my mom does.

Thanks for stopping by and don't forget to leave a comment!

Be Well!

  2. Yep, I bet she could sell them. It's very pretty. I've always wanted to learn to crochet and knit and whatever. I can sew a little, but that's it.

  5. Alicia, those are beautiful. I agree she needs to open up an online store. Goodness!

You know, when my mother passed away, I remember looking at her still hands, and how beautiful they were, and thinking about all the wonderful things they had done during her lifetime. She too was always sewing, cleaning, cooking, painting, crocheting, gardening ... and I felt heartbroken. You're so lucky to still have your mom, and I'm glad you cherish her.

  6. My mom crocheted as well -- but just edgings on pillow slips. What beautiful crochet and I can't believe the size of the last supper -- that is amazing. She is one talented woman and what a treasure for you. And yes, I would knock out a window to make a wall tohang it as well!

  9. Hi sweet friend...

Ohhh my...I can't even imagine crocheting the Last Supper...let alone doing one that measures 4x6ft!!! That is simply amazing!!! First of all...the talent and craftmanship involved just boggles my little mind...then, there is the time and patience a project like that would require...Ohhh my!!! I'm just soooo happy for you though...that this lovely piece has been handed down to you by your sweet mother! What a family heirloom...such a sweet treasure!!! Ohhh...and I just love the gorgeous butterfly piece that she made for you!!! It's fabulous!!! I love how it looks draped over the back of your chair! But a piece like that really is versatile! It would make a beautiful table runner for a pretty tablescape too!!! I would just adore having something like that for a pretty table setting!!! Your mother is certainly one talented lady...what a blessing to have such a special mama!!!

Well Darlin', what a sweet post to share with all of us for Sunday Favorites!!! I sure did enjoy all of that "eye candy"!!! Thank you so much for your participation!!!

    Warmest wishes,
    Chari @Happy To Design

  10. Happy To Be/Gloria - It's always nice to have those items handed down from generation to generation. I guess my kids will hand down my URL address..lol.

Jo - I do cherish my mom and I know how lucky I am every day. My mom hates her hands because they are so old and wrinkly and have age spots, but to me they are the most beautiful things in the world.

Crafty Gardener - That you so much for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  11. Martha - I would love to have pillow slips with edgings like that. I've shown them to my mom but she prefers to embroider on pillow cases and kitchen towels. Our mothers can be stubborn!

RainGardener - Thank you. I switch it from the chair to the coffee table. I prefer it on the coffee table but sometimes I have to move it when my mom's grandkids come over, my nieces and nephews cause they love to play dice or color on it.

  13. Oh, it's just beautiful! And I think your piece is lovely as well...from what I could see in that photo.

I'm glad you showed your mom's piece on the chair so we could get an idea of the scale.

What lovely, intricate work she does!
I wonder how many ppl still know how to crochet?
