Chicken Fried Steak from The Pioneer Woman

I love Ree Drummond! If you haven't heard about her then I assume you live under a rock with no access to the Internet or to the Food Network!

Ree Drummond is THE PIONEER WOMAN! Ree Drummond started a little old blog several years ago called The Pioneer Woman Cooks! She took that little cooking blog from a small blog to a huge blog, one of the most popular to several cookbooks and her own show on the Food Network!

What I love about Ree is that she posts step by step photos of the process of each recipe, making it super simple to follow along. Today I decided to make her Chicken Fried Steak recipe. See...my mom she loves Chicken Fried Steak. There are very few things that my mom loves, very few. She is a very picky eater.

I noticed that whenever we eat at a restaurant she will order the Chicken Friend Steak, or the County Fried Steak or the Cowboy Steak, by any name it is simply a Chicken Fried Steak. A steak breaded and fried like you would do chicken (mom hates chicken by the way).

So I knew that someday I had to make mom homemade Chicken Fried Steak! Today was that day!

So I poured myself a glass of Wine because sometimes I like to cook with wine...sometimes I even add it to the food I'm cooking, today was not that day!

Then I followed her recipe, step by step! I salted and peppered the cubed steak which had already been tenderized. I beat eggs with milk. I seasoned the flour with salt, pepper, cayenne pepper and then more black pepper, lots of black pepper!

Taking the steak I dipped it into the milky-egg mixture, then the seasoned flour then back into the egg and then back into the seasoned flour and then set them aside while I did all the rest. Then I added the oil to the pan, waited for it to become adequately hot and then added the steak. Cooked 7 minutes on each side and Voila!

Mom joined me in the kitchen by making the mashed potatoes. She makes the best mashed potatoes! I don't know what she does to them but everyone that has had them will tell you that they are the best!

Since mashed potatoes are filled with Carbs, I decided I would make some yummy green beans instead, fried in bacon grease with some diced garlic and then just to be fancy I added some slivered almonds! Wine makes me so creative!

Sometimes you drive home and you think how exhausted you are but then you just pour yourself a glass of wine, invite Ree Drummond into your kitchen and magic just happens!

  1. I am not enthralled with green beans, I'll eat them but not my favorite. I have to admit though, yours look yummy. Leave the cayenne pepper and half the black pepper out, and I believe you would have a meal suitable for an Irishman.

    Nice looking wine BTW.

    1. Green beans are probably my least favorite, but so easy to make. I prefer broccoli and zucchini. But you should try them fresh sauteed with garlic and almonds in just a bit of bacon fat...YUM!

I figured that you would like this dish, minus the cayenne, but you have to pepper chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, that's what gives it that awesome flavor! I'm going to have to make this again real soon. (I peeled the breading off of my piece. Tons of carbs with all that flour!)

The wine was very good. A little sweet for my taste but for some reason it really hit the spot that day. Thanks for stopping by, always a treat to read your comments!

    2. Have you ever tried pinot grigio, it is a white, a California variant of pinot gris. Much drier than Reisling but not totally dry.

I just had a glass with a tomato and cucumber salad and it was excellent.

    3. I do love pinot grigio!!!!! It is my very favorite! I love how crisp and dry it is. If you can find it, and I'm sure you can, you should try the Cavit Collection Pinot Grigio. You can find it at Target, believe it or not. Not a super expensive la-dee-da kinda wine, just a delicious, inexpensive wine and you can taste the apple in it. I love that one! I also like the Mirrassou brand. Sounds like a great combination tomato-cucumber salad with a dry white wine! Yum!

    4. With a few exceptions all wine sales in Pennsylvania are conducted by the PA Liquor Control Board. If they don't sell it, you are SOL. I'll have to look for it but I have a ton of wine laying around now and at a glass a week it doesn't move fast. Yes I am not into la-dee-da wine, in fact my favorite is good old Gallo Industrial Grade White Zinfandel from the horse urinals of Modesto. It doesn't give me a head ache.

  2. There's nothing more satisfying than pleasing one's own mother.

The best chicken dish I ever had, was schawarma chicken, tucked in a warm, big round roll with salad, hummus, tachina - in a small eatery in the middle of Bucharest, Romania.
Schawarma is meat cooked on a vertical spit (there's also a home version of this spit for those interested to try it at home}.

I usually try to keep away from fried food; however, the photos of your fried chicken and your writing style are very enjoyable.

    1. I love to see her eat DUTA, probably because she is such a picky eater and so thin and frail. She really enjoyed this dish though. It may become a Sunday tradition.

I googled schawarma chicken and that looks delicious! We have a Greek Festival here once a year and I went once and they had the vertical spit chicken and served it in a roll that seemed like a pita bread with a cucumber dressing on it. It was fabulous and now I'm craving it!

I just googled the festival and oh my goodness...it's this weekend!! I'm going to make it a point to go and have this delicacy again. Don't you just love food? I can't understand why my mom doesn't have the same love for it! http://www.stgeorgebakersfield.org/greek-food-festival/

  3. BTW - I love the Riesling! I have never had chicken fried steak by any name. It isn't a northern thing. I am sure it is delicious though.

    1. Hi Rebecca! I always thought chicken fried steak was a Southern thing? Not really sure. I first had it here in Bakersfield at Buck Owens Crystal Palace. Buck is kind of a big thing here in Bakersfield and at his restaurant they serve a chicken fried steak with gravy that takes up the whole plate! It is super good there but the one Pioneer Woman makes can give them a run for their money.

This was a pretty good Riesling, I enjoyed it and will have to pick up another bottle soon. Thanks for stopping by!
