The Ugliness of Reality TV - From Left to Write

Have you ever watched the Jerry Springer Show? If you are a fan, you may want to quit reading now, fair warning!

For those that have never watched the show let me wrap it up by saying it’s a show promoting all the ugliness that is America on reality TV shows.

Jerry and his staff have a knack for finding those people that would sell their momma’s souls for their 15 minutes of fame and a little bit of cash!

The majority of their episodes deal with “Are you my daddy” and “Who is my daddy” and couples that have affairs with other people. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anything else on Jerry's show.

I tried to find a video I could post for anyone that hasn't seen the show but after watching a few of them it just got so depressing. Human beings at their worse! The shows that deal with paternity are so sad and pathetic and I feel so sorry for the children involved…but the ones dealing with infidelity are the ones that anger me the most! It just seems to me that on the show and in real life, that whenever one spouse cheats on the other spouse, the spouses always forgive each other but are angry at the person that the spouse had the affair with.

I think I've posted before how crazy I think that is. To my way of thinking, if you are married to someone, they promised to love you and be true to you and they broke that promise to you. The other person that they had the affair with, be it a man or woman, that other person never made a promise to either spouse....so why would you want to beat them up, like they do on the Jerry Springer Show and yet they choose to forgive the cheating spouse?

This just does not make sense to me! I don't want to spoil the book that I read this month for my book club, From Left to Write, so I won't say anymore, but the book inspired me to write this post.

This post was inspired by the novel Those We Love Most by Lee Woodruff. Every family has its secrets and deceptions, but they come to surface when a tragic accident changes the family dynamic forever.. Join From Left to Write on June 6 as we discuss Those We Love Most. You can also enter to win a live video chat with Lee Woodruff! As a member, I received a copy of the book for review purposes.

  1. I agree. The hateful, ridiculous reality shows are giving people "permission" to act rudely and treat people badly in real life. Parents who watch these shows, probably ignore the fact that their children are also watching letting the children think that anything goes as they model the behavior they're seeing on tv. Why is this considered entertainment? Why do people spend their precious time in life watching the worst in our society act out? Worse yet, I think much on Jerry Springer is fake and put on for show and supposed entertainment value (?). Can't say the same necessarily for Housewives of whatever which I've seen commercials for. These shows are all helping to further ruin our society. People become desensitized to bad behavior, rudeness, aggression, lying, cheating... by watching these shows. I'll step down off my soap box now.

    1. Hey...how did you take the words right out of my head? That is exactly how I feel. It makes me sad to think that our society finds entertainment in the ridicule and humiliation of other fellow human beings! Thanks for commenting!

  2. Years ago, my wife, son and I went TV shopping. My son was about 9 or 10. So we are looking at TVs and I am reading the various features and pointing out stuff to my wife. I am deeply involved in finding the most features for our buck completely oblivious to what is going on. My son is gaping at the various TV and my wife is turning them off.

"What the hell are you doing?"

"I am turning off these TVs."

"Why? We are supposed to be buying a TV not securing the place early in the afternoon for the night watchman. "

    "I'll tell you later."

So I pick a TV from all the dead TVs and we depart. Later my wife tells me that Maury or some other ass had a special on:

"Men who watch their wives having sex with other men."

The kid was taking it all in moving ahead of my frantic wife shutting off TVs.

The scary thing is that we send TV signals to satellites. I am always afraid that some kind and benevolent alien race will watch one of these shows and kindly put us out of our misery.

I think on the blaming / forgiveness game, couples team up against the third party as a common enemy in creating the affair and "destroying" our marriage. It is stupid TV regardless, and I have always questioned the mental stability of people who would get on national TV and air out the laundry. It seems like an asinine way of getting one's 15 minutes of fame.

    1. I totally agree with you as well...and I like your theory about the couples teaming up against the 3rd party. Well played Sextant!

I can't imagine raising little children in this day and age with all the relaxed attitudes about morality and sexuality and violence, but I guess to each his own. Thank you for commenting Sextant, always an eye opener!
