Sister Wives

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past 4 or 5 television seasons, you’ve probably heard about a television reality show on The Learning Channel (TLC) called Sister Wives. The show is about this guy named Kody Brown who has a gaggle of wives. Hmmm, I think a gaggle is five and at last count there are 4 wives and around 16 or so children, so maybe he doesn’t have a whole gaggle, but I just like the term gaggle.

They all live in Vegas now, but I believe when the show first started they were living in Utah. They are a polygamist family, meaning Kody is married to one wife legally and the other wives are a “spiritual union”. The women are known as Sister Wives. I guess not only are they wives but the spiritual union makes them sisters to each other or something like that. I’ve never watched the show, just know about the show because of snippets of the promos for the show and what I’ve read online.

So what does this have to do with me? Well I believe a spiritual union may be in my future. You see…this morning while just doing my job I contacted a client about renewing his insurance policy. He seemed very worried that I get all his paperwork to him right away as he was heading out of town tomorrow. I told him not to worry; I would be sending all his paperwork today. Then I reminded him that he doesn’t have to renew this policy until June 30th which is when the existing policy will expire.

He then exclaimed, “See Alicia…that is why I love you! You keep my life straight!” (I only insure his vehicle…how is that his life?) Then he says, “Are you married?” Before I could answer, he goes on to say, “I know I’m married, but I have room in my life and in my house for another wife and I would like you to be that wife. I’m a really good husband and would treat you well.”

…… Say what?

The only thing I could think of to say was, “It sounds to me like you don’t want another wife, you just want a bookkeeper!” Thankfully he just laughed and didn’t take offense to my thoughtless declination to become his wife…Whew! I let him down easy... although I wouldn’t just be gaining a husband, I would also be gaining a sister, a Sister Wife.

    1. Oh No Angie! I don't want those that are just "looking for a wife"...I want the ones that are looking for love and companionship! But keep looking for me :)

  2. Well apparently I live under a rock. Well actually no, I just live with the TV mostly off. But I can see that I have been culturally deprived. I have never heard of that show, nor will I be tuning in any time soon.

Right after I retired, I had been darkening the doorway of my financial planner quite a bit. She quite honestly is not hard to look at, and she is an amazing financial planner. She cut through all the BS, got my 401K rolled over, with the minimum fuss. She got me set up and reassured that I wouldn't be eating dog food when I turned 70. She is smart, capable, well organized, fast, and knows her s--t (one of my highest personal compliments). She was worth her weight in gold. Well like I say I had been seeing her quite a bit right when I retired. One day I am walking in the back yard and my knee kind of snapped and it felt like somebody rammed a hot poker through it. I immediately thought "Oh hell I had better call Laura."

What? When she gets done setting up my annuity, she can perform a knee replacement? Well, I suppose that while I was ready to expand her considerable skill set to that of a surgeon, I did stop short of asking her hand in holy polygamy.

Will your husband and sister wife still allow you to blog?

    1. She must have been some financial planner! What was wrong with your knee? Did it get fixed? No one...not a husband or a sister wife would keep me from blogging. I'm addicted my friend!

  3. I'm not familiar with the show but I guess sister wives are an unhappy lot driven by jealousy and exploited by the husband.
In Israel we have a black sect called the 'black hebrews'. The male can have several wives. Once I saw a documentary on this sect and it was devastating to watch the husband bring a new and younger wife, and the other three or four trying and not succeeding to hide their jealousy and bitterness.

    1. Yes...I can't imagine that there wouldn't be jealousy and bitterness. I can't imagine why a woman would want to be one of many. And as difficult as marriage is why would one man want to try to get along with more than one wife!

  4. No, I don't think that you would enjoy being a "sister wife," Alicia! LOL The man has too many perks in a relationship such as that one; and the women just take care of his household(s). I used to watch "Big Love" and enjoyed it immensely. It was some nutty show! I turned on "Sister Wives" and watched a bit of one episode- reality TV is one strange genre. Now go look for a good, single man!!!! :-) Sue

    1. I think that I would want a wife myself, only because I would love to have someone that would do all the cooking, cleaning, pay my bills and take care of me when I'm sick. Yep...the man definitely has too many perks in that relationship.
