A Pain in the Neck!

Life is sad when you get hurt just by sleeping. Imagine that? I went to bed a healthy, happy individual last night and when I awoke this morning I’m crippled and can’t move my head to the left more than a few inches without excruciating pain!

How did I do that? What did I do in my sleep that was so vigorous and dangerous that I injured myself? I’m not even vigorous and dangerous when I’m awake!

I know, I know…I just slept wrong, but still after 50+ years of sleeping don’t you think I would have sleep down to an art form, a science, and wouldn’t injure myself!

How about you? Do you injure yourself by sleeping nowadays?

  1. My condolences. I have a neck pain that comes, lasts several weeks and goes mysteriously as it came. It can be miserable. Our necks are amazing. It supports an abnormally large head with a weighty brain and it supports it in the wrong orientation. Our spines and vertebrae have had to adapt from a horizontal posture of most animals to the vertical posture of humans. This puts all of our disks in to compressive loading. It is a wonder we don't have more back and neck trouble. I hope it eases up for you.

  2. Sextant - So my head is abnormally large? Cause as a woman that's all I saw in your comment. You know women like to pick apart what you men say! I did kinda like the weighty brain part though!

    Thanks for the condolences!

  3. Gotta HATE it when that happens.

I think when it happens to me it's 'cause I'm OLD.

I'm suffering right now with sciatica caused by an inflamed sacroiliac - - - let's commiserate together, shall we?

  4. Oh Keetha! My dear, my darling....how I feel for you. I suffered from Sciatica last year and was off work for a month. It is the worse pain ever! I would gladly give birth 4 times in a row than to suffer from Sciatica.
Please take care and see if you can't get some physical therapy, it does wonders. And yes, lets commiserate together!

  5. Keetha: More of the same from wikipedia:

Sciatica ( /saɪˈætɪkə/; sciatic neuritis)[1] is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five spinal nerve roots that give rise to each sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the left or right or both sciatic nerves.

We pay dearly for our big brains and bi-pedal stance, and fashionably normal sized heads.

My heart goes out to both of you.

  9. Hi Paula! It's really not fair is it! But actually today I woke up and I'm fine again! I guess I did just sleep wrong. I'm going to have to keep practicing!

  11. Ouch. I feel for you. Neck pain is really torturous. I hope you get better real soon. Maybe a heating pad will help a little.

I am in pain a lot but mine is from Rheumatoid Arthritis. Sometimes, it is so bad that I can not lift my arm which prevents me from getting dressed, brushing my teeth, etc. My husband has to help me a lot. This year has been really good to me until September. I've been in pain nearly every day this month. Some days worse than others, but I do my best to keep a smile on my face.

  12. ~JarieLyn~ My sister has Rheumatoid Arthritis too. I know she suffers a lot from it. Hopefully the rest of the year will be good for you too. At least it doesn't get too cold in your neck of the woods, I know the cold weather makes it that much worse.

  13. Alicia, that happened to me too. I went to bed feeling perfectly fine, and I got up the next morning with such a painful shoulder, I couldn't hook up my bra. (TMI?) *heh* I think my mouse on my home computer is at the wrong height, and it's exacerbates it.

Bette Davis said, "Getting old ain't for sissies..." :-)

  14. Hi Jo,

Sad isn't it? Funny thing is that my shoulder and arm start hurting when I use the mouse at home, but not the one at work. I think it's because at work I have the keyboard atop my desk so my arm rests on the desk whereas at home the keyboard slides out so my arm just hangs there in the air not resting on anything.

I never thought about it, maybe I'll move my keyboard up to the desktop at home.

And no, getting old ain't for sissies, I totally agree with Bette Davis!
